Rise and Shine #NoteddTribe!
Now the title of this issue might allude to that we’re peacing out for good good. That’s not the case at all — it’s just for the year. This issue is our last official issue of 2021; can you believe it?!?!
We’ve relatively released a Notedd issue (or two) every week from January 14 to today, December 16. This milestone is huge for us, especially if you’ve been with us since the beginning.
We are proud to be with you today, with more joy and eagerness to do even more in 2022, plus we’re extending our brand with a community platform!
But before we say goodbye to 2021 and embark on new adventures in 2022, we must reflect, express our gratitude, and celebrate. Last week, we were in a state of self-reflection. This week is about self-appreciation.
Of course, we should all make sure to express gratitude to others, especially around this time of year, but let’s not forget to thank ourselves. We just experienced another season of True Life: I’m living in a pandemic still, filled with new beginnings, unexpected turns of events, and never-ending adulting moments.
This guide from 21Ninety provides the perfect template to write a thank you letter to yourself. You can list out all of the incredible milestones you reached and the fantastic things you did to take care of yourself emotionally, financially, mentally, and physically.
Take some time over the next couple of weeks, write your letters and let it be a reminder that you did the damn thing in 2021!

We would be remiss if we didn’t share the multiple ways to help those devastatingly impacted by more than 20 tornadoes that ripped across five states earlier this week. We are keeping all of those affected in our thoughts and prayers. Here’s a look at some of the relief being provided and ways to donate.
12 Black women were named on Forbes World’s 100 Most Powerful Women Of 2021 list. Can you guess who? Check out the list to learn more.
She once said, “No Black woman writer in this culture can write ‘too much.’” Author, educator, and activist bell hooks passed away earlier this week.
Founder of Beauty 2 The Streetz Shirley Raines was recently named CNN’s Hero Of The Year.
Kristen Hayden became the first Black woman to win a US national senior title at the USA Diving Winter Nationals.
The Nassau County chief of detectives, Keechant Sewell, will become New York City’s first female police commissioner. She will be taking over one of the nation’s largest police forces.
One year ago, Sandra Lindsay became the first person in the US to get vaccinated against COVID-19. She shares with TIME why this moment “meant the world” to her.
It’s startling to see how we’ve come so far, but yet, not far enough, especially in the media industry.
The stats alone are disheartening:
The Status of Women in the US Media 2019, original research by the Women’s Media Center, shows that men still dominate in every part of the news, entertainment, and digital media despite some gains.
According to the Pew Research Center, the percentage of white and male workers in newsrooms was higher than that of the overall US workforce.
According to the Columbia Journalism Review, editors of the nation’s 135 most widely distributed newspapers are overwhelmingly male and white.
According to race-parity advocates of Color of Change, Black writers were systematically excluded from working on TV entertainment shows, with 17.3 percent of shows having one Black writer, 17.3 percent having two or more Black writers, and the rest none.
These statistics are why we’re launching an important initiative that will shed light on the importance and significance of Black women in media, but we need your help!
We would love to hear from any members of the #NoteddTribe who are journalists, reporters, podcasters, writers, or any Black woman working in or with media! If you know someone who matches this criterion, we would love to hear from them too!
Please take our survey and tell us more about your work, what inspires you, and how you plan to move the needle forward as a Black woman in media.
Lastly, if you match the criteria and participate in our survey, you will be entered to win a special gift from us. Click the link below to take the survey!
Also, for our writers in the #NoteddTribe, check out our fellow Substack writer’s extensive list of 2022 deadlines for writers. One More Question Founder Britany Robinson created an entire list filled with fellowships, grants, contests, events from now to December 2022.
If you’re interested in reading more of Britany’s work, which we highly recommend as a fellow subscriber, you can subscribe here. She’s even offering 50% off for our community to her premium newsletter which is a sweet deal. It’s available now until December 31. It’s one that you don’t want to miss out on!
