There is power in asserting our existence, experience, lives, through words.
VOL 66 - THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 18
We are back with you today on another beautiful and bright Thursday morning, #NoteddTribe!
We’re celebrating another anniversary. 🎉 We reached our first full year of writing on Substack.
We moved to this platform to join a community of fellow writers who have similar passions to write, discuss important topics and issues within their communities, and lead cultural conversations with their subscribers. We also wanted to provide our readers with a more shareable, community-driven experience as you can always share our newsletter with your network and join the conversation by liking our posts and leaving us comments.
We hope you’ve been enjoying our time here on Substack, as it’s been a great new home for us thus far. We’ve got a jam-packed issue, so let’s get to it.
#StayNotedd
The city of New Orleans recently honored Ruby Bridges, Gail Etienne, Leona Tate, and Tessie Prevost for integrating Louisiana schools in 1960 at just six-years-old. This year marks the 61st anniversary of school desegregation.
The FDA could authorize Moderna and Pfizer booster shots as early as this week. This authorization would allow every adult who is fully vaccinated with the Pfizer or Moderna shot at least six months ago eligibility for a booster and the option to choose which shot they would like to receive.
NASA astronaut Dr. Jessica Watkins will become the first Black woman on SpaceX’s next six-month mission to the International Space Station.
A recent Pew Research study explores colorism within the Latinx population, as many shared that “skin color is an important factor affecting their lives and life chances.” 62% of Hispanic adults say having a darker skin color hurts Hispanics’ ability to get ahead in the US, while 59% share that having a lighter skin color helps Hispanics get ahead.
If you want your packages to arrive by Dec. 25, here are the shipping deadlines that you want to keep in mind to avoid any delays this holiday season.
Student protesters at Howard University reached a deal with campus leadership. Officials promised to improve their communication with the student body and deliver a strategy to expand and improve the university’s infrastructure.
The Biden Administration recently announced an additional $785 million from the American Rescue Plan that will go towards helping communities of color that have been hit hardest by the coronavirus. This decision was based on recommendations from a new federal COVID-19 health equity report released last month from the COVID-19 Health Equity Task Force, led by Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith.
For the TikTokers out there, you could be eligible to receive compensation. Tik Tok has agreed to pay out $92 million to settle lawsuits alleging the service harvested personal data from its users without their permission. Here’s what you need to know about the case and how to submit a claim if you meet the qualifications.
What happens next with the infrastructure bill? Earlier this week, President Biden signed the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill into law. WIRED details a list of five key takeaways from the bill:
$1.44 billion will be dedicated each year to community projects aimed at pedestrians, cyclists, and others using non-motorized transport.
The bill includes $89.9 billion in funding for public transit, which includes $39 billion to modernize systems rather than building new ones. Additionally, 80 percent of the money in the bill goes to highway-focused funding.
$65 billion will be allocated toward internet connectivity and access. A portion will be dedicated to giving $30 monthly vouchers for internet service to low-income Americans, replacing a $50 a month voucher program that applied to fewer people.
$154 billion is dedicated for climate change projects such as electric school buses, electric vehicle charging infrastructure and stations, and fixing and improving the electric grid.
Some $120 billion of the $550 billion in new federal spending will be distributed through competitive programs across state and local governments through "formulas," which are based on factors like population and gas-tax revenue.
Additionally, CNN also shared a list of infrastructure projects in Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, and Cincinnati that will be seeking federal funds.
Here’s what else we notedd and acknowledged:
Speaking of colorism in communities, the Darkest Hue addresses the nuances of colorism within the Black community. Recently, they analyzed the formula for Black love in television and film, particularly in Netflix's "The Harder They Fall," which often features a light-skinned woman with a light-skinned or dark-skinned man.
Would you live in America's first Utopian city? Former president of Walmart e-commerce and co-founder of Jet.com and Diapers.com Marc Lore is attempting to create a Utopian city in the middle of the American desert. The city will cost over $400 billion and would be built in a desert if properly funded. Lore's idea is to create a place that is focused on societal inclusion over division, providing equal access to health care, education, and safe environments for families regardless of income, race, or gender. The first phase of 50,000 living residents in the city could be welcomed by 2030.
"Inciting violence begets violence." It is astonishing how the act of violence against women, whether actually taken against them or verbally said, is taken lightly or seen as a joke. While the House of Representatives is taking measures to censure and remove Rep. Paul Gosar from his committees after tweeting a violent video targeting Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and President Biden, this behavior is entirely wrong. Are the consequences justifiable for his actions?

You can now order and add a piece of our history to your bookshelf, as Nikole Hannah-Jones' 1619 Project has been adapted and expanded into a book. "The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story" is comprised of 18 essays and 36 poems and works of fiction from historians, highlighting the legacy of slavery in the United States and how it continues to shape contemporary American life. The book also contains endnotes with citations that allow people to see the sources of the facts in the book. In addition to "The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story," Hannah-Jones also showcased the historical facts of slavery in a children's book called "The 1619 Project: Born On The Water." Both are great suggestions to gift this holiday season!
