Another month down and another month of new beginnings, #NoteddTribe! September signals the transition from summer into fall (September 22) and the beginning of a new school year for parents and teachers.
The spiritual meaning of the month is linked to refocusing your inner energy. It's an opportunity to re-evaluate and pivot to achieve your greatest successes for the rest of the year. Not to mention, there are expected to be seven planets in retrograde this month — so brace yourself. That's why we're excited to recognize Self-Improvement Month and Self-Care Awareness Month as a real-time moment to prepare and reach the remaining goals we seek to make by the end of 2021.
Stay tuned as we have five unique opportunities to bring tips, practices, and even a couple of guest speakers to your inbox all month long. If you'd like to know anything related to Self-Improvement Month and Self-Care Awareness Month, send your ideas directly to Lauren, and we'll find ways to incorporate and share with the rest of the tribe.

On A Personal Note
We've been working behind the scenes as we're launching a crowdfunding campaign in a couple of weeks.
Preparation for this campaign has been a labor of love, but our crowdfunding efforts with supporters like yourselves will help with the launch of the new community platform. More details to come, but in the meantime, sign up for the platform today and grab your spot as a founding member before the big reveal later this year.
Check out The Cut's article on how these ten Black women put the true meaning behind the word "supermodel," becoming household names from Beverly Johnson to Tyra Banks to Debra Shaw.
Congratulations to Nia DaCosta! She became the first Black female director to debut at the top of the US box office with her film Candyman.
Nearly two years since the murder of Elijah McClain, a Colorado grand jury indicted three police officers and two paramedics who placed McClain in a carotid hold and then injected him with ketamine. Justice for Antwan Gilmoreis still sought after he was awoken and fatally shot in his car last week in DC.
Let's celebrate these Black female chefs who are breaking up the "cooking show boys club."
One word: Texas.
This week, the Republican-controlled Texas Legislature passed a bill on Tuesday that will make Texas one of the most challenging states to vote in. The new legislation forbids balloting methods that were introduced last year to make voting more accessible, like drive-through polling places and 24-hour voting. It also creates barriers for poll workers to help voters who need assistance, such as translations. It even requires large Texas counties to provide live streaming video at ballot-counting locations.
Yesterday, an abortion ban went into effect in Texas that prohibits getting an abortion starting at six weeks of pregnancy, and the Supreme Court refused to intervene. Many abortion advocates share that it's too early as many aren't even aware that they are pregnant within that timeframe. It also limits the timing to figure out the logistics of finding and scheduling an appointment. The ban puts a minimum of a $10,000 bounty on anyone that helps someone obtain an abortion in Texas. Here is how you can help chip in to support organizations like Support Your Sistah at the Afiya Center, Frontera Fund, and The Bridge Collective.
We’re Thinking Of…
...those who were significantly impacted by Hurricane Ida, along with those who are expected to face flash flooding this week and weekend. Listed below are ways to lend your support if you haven't already.
More than anything, if this community is aware of cultural competency resources that could be shared in environments like a workplace or on social media, that would be great.
Over the last week, the responses we've either seen or heard through conversations with colleagues or comments in the media and social media platforms are honestly disappointing. There is a grave need to remove any form of bias or stereotypes, especially when it comes to catastrophic disasters that affect all communities near the gulf. However, those most impacted are the vulnerable communities that are often overlooked or misunderstood. We mentioned before, retraumatization alone can severely affect someone. We should be coming from at least a place of awareness and understanding during this time.
HONORABLE MENTIONS
This summer, Essence launched a new series called Soul-Care. It's a three-part series about ways Black women can practice self-care when it comes to resting their souls, with input from experts in medicine, theology, and psychology. The psychological part of the series, "Soul-Care: Why 'Burnout' Is Not An Individual Failing And How To Protect Yourself From It," features Therapy for Black Girls Founder Dr. Joy Harden on how the weariness of the soul can affect you mentally. She highlights the power of unplugging and tips to avoid spiritual fatigue.
We may be in September, but learning to attract abundance through a money mindset will never fade. Positive affirmations can help with self-care and create brighter days. Demietra shared a list of her favorite money affirmations to attract more with a positive mindset. You can still grab your free copy, including Demietra's favorite affirmations, along with her words of wisdom on personal financing and investing by visiting this link here.
Who else needs to slow down and take an inventory of themselves? 🙋🏾♀️ Well, that's what Candice Jones did after graduating from college and changing her mind about her career path. She started to check on herself more often to see where her guilt and shame came from to begin healing and transform her journey into a workbook, The Self-Love Workbook. She created this as a resource to help other young Black women use it on their ongoing journey to self-love and acceptance. Described on their website, the Self-Love Workbook encourages the start of a beautiful journey of healing trauma, releasing self-doubt, and rediscovering their authentic self. Grab your copy today!
We're grabbing two copies as we want to experience this journey with a member of the #NoteddTribe and hold ourselves accountable in the process — if you're up for it too. Send Lauren a note directly that "you're in," and we'll send that copy to you directly.
