Happy Thursday, #NoteddTribe! Are you, too, having trouble sleeping as a result of the Daylight Savings Time change?
It appears in a recent study that disparities amongst racial groups impact communities of color when it comes to their sleep. Due to social, economic, and physical factors, Black people were five times more likely to sleep for shorter periods than white people. Hispanic and Chinese Americans were roughly two times as likely to get fewer hours of sleep than white people. Sleep impacts our health, productivity, and performance, but the study also found that stress related to racism and discrimination causes poor sleep habits.
A study by ScienceDirect found that 60% of insomnia for Black people was caused by racial discrimination. Sleep researcher Girardin Jean-Louis shared in a Black America Web article that if you’re sleeping for six hours or less and lose another 30 minutes of sleep, this could be the catalyst to high blood pressure, diabetes, and difficulty with HIV and cancer management.
Activist and author Bettina Love believes that it’s time for us to get our rest. She shares in a Popsugar article that rest in the form of resistance can include naps because our bodies benefit from sleep and relaxation. It can remove us from unhealthy and toxic environments, institutions, practices, and people, which will then allow us to “disrupt systems of power and privilege that are a threat to social progress and transformation.”
So, how can we get more rest? Try building rest periods or naps more often during your daily or weekly routine. You can also try going to bed between 10 pm to 11 pm, as studies show that falling asleep during this hour decreases the chances of heart disease and other health factors.
Let’s get our rest because we earned it like Ralinda Watts shares in her Popsugar article!

In a recent Slate article, Rachelle Hampton explores how contemporary novels about Black women in the workplace don’t paint the entire picture of our experiences. She argues that being a Black woman in the workplace can be like starring in a thriller.
Hampton explores how novels such as Zakiya Dalila Harris’ The Other Black Girl and Wanda M. Morris’ All Her Little Secrets showcase the Black protagonist’s experience with micro-aggressions and how they engage in code-switching. However, Hampton argues that the authors missed the opportunity to explore the deep “levels of mundane yet terrifying psychological warfare that Black women experience in white workplaces.”
These novels are on our list to read during the holidays, but curious if others have read these novels and have similar sentiments? Would you also say that working in the workplace is like “starring in a thriller,” or is there a need for a thriller novel or Jordan Peele-type horror film about Black women in the workplace?
