Good Morning #NoteddTribe! Yesterday marked the 20th anniversary of songstress and actress Aaliyah’s tragic death. It feels like yesterday when seven-year-old me saw the breaking news hit the screen and was completely devastated.
Despite some not-so-great recent events occurring leading up to her remembrance this year, from an authorized autobiography to the release of her music without full accounting to the estate nor their full consent of the release, Aaliyah’s legacy lives on through the celebrations like ones from Black Girl Songbook.
One of our favorite podcasts — Black Girl Songbook — kicked off their second season with an episode celebrating the life, music, and impact of Aaliyah. Founder Danyel Smith spoke with choreographer and close friend of Aaliyah, Fatima Robinson, who worked with Aaliyah on her iconic videos.
Aaliyah was indeed one in a million!
What were your favorite Aaliyah songs?
For us, we can’t just name one. The top three are “Four Page Letter,” “More Than A Woman,” and “I Care 4 U.” Join the conversation and share your favorites by adding a comment to this thread!
As we continue to celebrate Aaliyah’s legacy, we also have a packed issue with what we notedd for you this week, along with a few honorable mentions and ways to get involved this weekend for the March on Voting Rights. #staynotedd
It’s been too long, and we’re lost without you!
Yes, we are quoting Aaliyah’s “I Miss You” song, but we have a small favor to ask where you can receive a gift card of your choice as a token of our appreciation.
Can you take this quick survey for us? It won’t take more than five minutes.

Did you know Congress passed a resolution designating August as Hip-Hop Recognition Month? We can all have our own Brown Sugar moment and celebrate with The Smithsonian Channel and MTV’s new digital series, “Meaning of Music.” This series explores the evolution and impact of hip-hop and features an episode on the influence of hip-hop feminism. Check out that episode and the complete series on YouTube.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s partnership with Tiffany & Co not only celebrates love but also will lead to a $2 million commitment towards HBCU scholarships and internship programs. We also celebrate the Black women behind the shoot, including stylist-to-the-stars June Ambrose and Nakia Collins (the hairstylist behind Beyonce’s iconic 2018 Vogue shoot).
For many, the recent earthquake in Haiti is a retraumatization of the past. Founder of Haitians Who Blog Shirley Dor shares how she and many others use mechanisms and tools to help cope with the trauma. It’s a powerful article that we should all take time to read, learn, and support one another during this time.
We’re Thinking Of...
...The brave women who are reliving their trauma by testifying against R. Kelly, who is facing multiple charges of sex trafficking and racketeering.
Just in the state of New York, he is charged with multiple counts, including child pornography, kidnapping, obstruction of justice, sex trafficking, and racketeering for purposes of sexual exploitation of children.
The trial is expected to last a month, with the second week of the trial in progress now.
