Hey Notees! Like the title notes, we’ve had another consecutive holiday that is no where near in comparison to holidays in previous years. Labor Day is a holiday that is meant to honor and recognize the American labor movement and the achievements of laborers in the United States. Although an estimated 1.4 million jobs were added in August, millions are still struggling, several sectors and industries are reducing in size and hiring is projected to slow down even more in September. When it’s broken down by race, Black and Hispanic workers are more likely to be unemployed but less likely to receive unemployment benefits. Then dissect that even more, unemployment for Black women between the ages of 20 and 24 has increased from 25.4% in July to 26.8% in August.
As Sisters From AARP Editor-In-Chief Claire McIntosh shares, this is no time for optics and an overhaul is overdue for minority workers who are working day and night, especially those on the frontlines. Claire shares how important it is to rest during this time, and we hope our fellow Notees were able to do just that this weekend. This month, the Notedd tribe has made rest and self-care our primary focus and we encourage you to do the same.
September is Self-Improvement Month. For us at Notedd, we are taking this a little more seriously. Despite not giving a full issue today, we are taking a hiatus this month to rest, but to also strategize new ways we can provide more great content and opportunities for you in the last few months of 2020. If you have any suggestions or recommendations, feel free to leave us a comment below.
We are excited for our Social Media Intern Kendall who will be embarking on new opportunities and continuing her studies at Spelman College. Kendall has been amazing as our inaugural intern who created new heights for our social media content and provided new ways for us to engage with you all. She will certainly be missed with huge shoes to fill, but at the same rate, we are excited to begin looking for a Social Media Intern and PR + Partnerships Intern this Fall. If you know anyone who would be interested in these roles, please feel free to send them our way as we update our careers site to apply.
Although we are looking to grow the team and re-strategize, we’re still committed to giving you articles that you may have missed and honorable mentions that we’ve given a try or excited to try in the next couple of weeks. Lastly, be on the lookout next week for a Self-Improvement infographic on some of the practices that we have been implementing this month as a mid-month pick-me-up and two great articles from brand strategist Jasmine Kent and our financial guru Demietra Williams.
