Compared with their colleagues of other races and ethnicities, Black women have always had distinct, and by and large worse, experiences at work. They are promoted more slowly than other groups of employees and are significantly underrepresented in senior leadership. They are less likely than women of other races and ethnicities to say their manager advocates for new opportunities for them. And they have fewer interactions with senior leaders, which means they often don’t get the sponsorship and advocacy they need to advance.
-McKinsey & Company Women In The Workplace 2020 report
While the McKinsey report isn’t too shocking when it’s often your reality placed on paper, these reports are good foundations to increase conversations and influence the needed change for equality and equity for women of color in the workplace. It also sparked the idea for our upcoming event that we are thrilled to host in honor of National Mentorship Month.
We’ll be exploring the importance of mentorship, sponsorship, and coaching to increase, develop, and grow professionally. Join our amazing panelists and moderator this Saturday, January 30 at 1 PM EST. Also, feel free to submit your questions when you register or email them to us directly.

We were thrilled when this Black woman-owned brand reached out to us after sending out an all-call for new loungewear brands to try.
From friends to business partners, Daja and Daija were motivated to learn all aspects of the fashion industry. Through ambition, creativity, and passion, they birthed Bloom Loungewear (Loungewear for Us). Each piece is carefully designed to comfortably snug the body and the colors, ranging from almond to a dark cocoa brown, embody the beauty of our Black and Brown skin.
Our goal is to partner and feature more women of color brands, products and services, and offer more content opportunities on our blog. Please email us today if you are interested in partnering with us or being featured in our next issue. In return, we’ll send over our Brand Partnerships deck, which provides more information on our brand, following, and our 2021 content calendar.
Celebrating National Hobby Month With Danica L. Rowe
We’re excited to kick off this year with perspectives and profiles for our blog. In addition to celebrating National Mentorship Month, we also recognize National Hobby Month as part of our monthly series centered around growth. Read more about our fellow Spelman sister and Notedd subscriber, Danica L. Rowe, who embraced a hobby to the fullest amid the COVID-19 craziness and how it helped her grow personally.
What’s your favorite quote or mantra?
“If at first you don’t succeed, Try, try, try again….”- William Edward Hickson
What’s your hobby?
Baking
What’s your profession?
Nurse Practitioner
What encouraged you to pick up this hobby?
Honestly, I’ve loved cooking and baking for as long as I can remember. The attention to detail and transformation of batter to cake or dough to bread is incredibly satisfying- especially when the recipe turns out right. I am an avid fan and viewer of the “Great British Baking Show” and have literally seen every episode. When the COVID 19 pandemic hit last year, I decided to challenge myself with my very own “technical baking challenges” at home. And the rest is history.
Learn more about Danica’s sweet hobby and her tips for finding your hobby this year by reaching more on our blog. You can also check out what Danica is baking next on her IG.
