We Recognize Mental Health Awareness Month
Despite the month coming to a near end, there’s always time to prioritize your mental health. 13% of the population identify as African American. Of this population, nearly 16% or 7 million people reported having a mental illness in the past year. As Black women and women of color, we are doing it all, experiencing it all, being it all, and all the other alls. We must prioritize ourselves, especially this week, which marks the one-year anniversary of George Floyd’s death. As notedd in a recent 19th article, there is a “sense of responsibility” that we have as Black women and girls for our community.
We’ll be honoring BIPOC mental health awareness month in July as a way to continue this vital conversation. In the meantime, check out these resources. If you have any to share that you’d like us to send to the rest of the tribe, send it to us using the below button.

Congratulations to Kristen Clarke, the first Black woman to lead the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division, and Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, the first Black woman to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid.
Please keep Black Lives Matters activist Sasha Johnson in your thoughts and prayers. She is in critical condition after being recently shot in the head. So far, five people were arrested in connection with the attack.
The last woman to appear on a U.S. coin was Sacagawea in 2000. Now poet and civil rights activist Maya Angelou will appear in the next circulation of coins by 2022. Credit is owned to California Rep. Barbara Lee, who has been working on legislation to get women on American coins since 2017.
60 Minutes is receiving backlash for omitting the Black women scientists who pioneered the research shared in the May 16 segment on racial bias in facial recognition. Learn more on what the scientists thought about the piece, see how CBS responds, and sign this petition if you agree too.
Solange Knowles is expanding her Saint Heron brand into a multidisciplinary platform, studio, and creative agency that will focus on “sharing the stories of our communities’ key voices.”

It’s hot outside y’all, but that doesn’t mean we have to walk around with a pound of makeup melting off of our faces like Nijera Perkins points out in her recent 21Ninety article. She shares “10 Makeup Essentials for a Natural Summer Beat,” which includes top picks from beauty brands such as AMBI, BLK/OPL, and Fenty Beauty, ranging from serums to eyeshadow palettes.

Founder Chichi Eburu struggled to find makeup suited for her deep skin tone. She decided to create a beauty brand that would enhance the dark hues of our skin tones without looking lighter or grayer. She made an inclusive beauty brand, Juvia’s Place, which is a complete line of makeup to fulfill all of your beauty needs. Her most popular item is the brand’s eyeshadow palettes (which is featured in the top 10 summer essentials article above). There is a variety of beauty options to choose from bold and bright to natural and subtle. Some of her best-sellers are on sale too!
Commentary: Nine Minutes and 29 Seconds
Tuesday marked the one-year death anniversary of George Floyd. Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd’s neck and back for nine minutes and 29 seconds while Floyd was handcuffed and lying face down on a Minneapolis street, which led to his death.
As a community, we all watched, listened, and read the verdict of Chauvin, who was convicted of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. However, the April 20 conviction did not proof that justice is served, as more Black and Brown men, women, and children are dying at the hands of police.
This week, we are thinking about George Floyd’s family and all families/friends/loved ones whose brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, fathers were tragically murdered for absolutely no reason.
We are thinking about brave women like Darnella Frazier, whose testimony was one of the critical pieces of evidence in the George Floyd case, reliving her experience witnessing the death that took place right in front of her. Her recent statement speaks to the earlier point on the sense of responsibility we have for our community, where we are all reliving these traumatic experiences while trying to see what more we can do.
Here’s an excerpt of Frazier’s Facebook post. Please read the rest, but in the meantime, again prioritize yourself, Black queens, and certainly do what is best for you to continue to lend your support and drive action.
My video didn’t save George Floyd, but it put his murderer away and off the streets. You can view George Floyd anyway you choose to view him, despite his past, because don’t we all have one? He was a loved one, someone’s son, someone’s father, someone’s brother, and someone’s friend. We the people won’t take the blame, you won’t keep pointing fingers at us as if it’s our fault, as if we are criminals. I don’t think people understand how serious death is…that person is never coming back.
These officers shouldn’t get to decide if someone gets to live or not. It’s time these officers start getting held accountable. Murdering people and abusing your power while doing it is not doing your job. It shouldn’t have to take people to actually go through something to understand it’s not ok. It’s called having a heart and understanding right from wrong.
