Checking in on you Notees! What are you doing these days? Like we mentioned in our 10th issue last month, we've been out of sorts since we've been on quarantine lockdown. Since we've been noticing the pickup of COVID-19 coverage and reading quite a bit of articles, we decided to put together this quick list of articles that have been helpful for us to make this transition a little easier. We've got best practices to help you stay well, manage your funds, set up your space - both personally and professionally, achieve mental stability and enjoy your off time during this season. Check it out by clicking on the below graphic picture or feel free to visit our new Resources tab on the website.
In honor of our one year anniversary, reaching our 10th issue and 100 Instagram followers, we'll be announcing something big next week. We'd love for you to stay tuned and on the lookout next Thursday, April 9! ☺️ Even tell a friend if you want to too.
As you are aware, we’ve Notedd a few things that have occurred over the last week, some big news that happened this week, a few honorable mentions to check out including our first Twitter Chat next weekend and words from the wise: Yamiche Alcindor.
Enjoy and always: Stay Notedd!
Dr. Nadine Burke Harris recently became California's first-ever surgeon general where she will continue her work helping underserved communities, improving the health of children who are exposed to traumatic experiences, and providing aid and support during COVID-19.
#WeLoveYamiche reached nearly 5K tweets earlier this week in support of PBS NewsHour White House Correspondent Yamiche Alcindor who has not only been verbally attacked by Trump once, but twice for asking valid questions during a press briefing on COVID-19 - which is now shedding more light on Trump's issue with women of color challenging him.
CEO of Chase Consumer Banking at JPMorgan Chase Thasunda Brown Duckett shares how her upbringing presented the opportunity to get involved with the financial industry, the impact of closing the racial wage gap and best practices for achieving financial freedom through the Advancing Black Pathways initiative.
What Happens After Census Day?: With COVID-19 on the rise, we hope you are still able to complete the 2020 Census. Census Day was yesterday (April 1), but you can still complete it after this date. Despite the advancements to the survey that allows you to select specific origins under each race box (i.e. under the Black race box is African American, Haitian, Nigerian, Ethiopian, Somali, etc.), the survey is still problematic for the Hispanic race as there is not one single origin box listed or provided - leaving out any Hispanic data related to their origin. This is why it's so important to complete the survey because not only does it help allocate resources and federal funding to help your local communities, but we have to read and take the survey to read between the lines and raise red flags like these to ensure that improvements can be made for the next survey 10 years later. Now we are on our way through the next steps to close out this 2020 Census which includes counting people who are experiencing homelessness and large populations at colleges, prisons and senior centers, but discussions are starting for the 2030 Census. It is being evaluated to add new questions for Middle Eastern and North African origins, but nothing has been said to improve the current questions including the single origin Hispanic question.
Celebrating her 25th Anniversary: We cannot believe it has been 25 years since the death of multi-talented Selena Quintanilla-Pérez. Since her death, Selena's light has only flourished. In addition to Jennifer Lopez's debut role playing Selena in her biographical film, she is celebrated and honored every year in Texas on Selena Quintanilla-Pérez Day which is her birthday (April 16). Selena is featured in Madame Tusseauds Wax Museum in Hollywood and in the Texas Hall of Fame. This year alone, MAC Cosmetics will be debuting their second Selena inspired makeup collection, and a new series on her life is scheduled to debut on Netflix later this year. We can't wait to check it out!
Equal Pay Day: According to recent Census data, women only make 81.6 cents for every dollar men make. Equal Pay Day was honored earlier this week to highlight the pay disparity between men and women in the US. When you delve into the data, women of color are still the most affected with Asian American women making the most at 92 cents, African American women at 62 cents, Native American women at 57 cents and Hispanic women making the least at 54 cents. Certainly, the wage gap is closing and big brands are making headway to implement the necessary changes but as the saying goes, there is still work to be done and can be achieved more during this election year.
Honorable mentions are a bit different this week, as we are sharing upcoming events that we'd love for you to join us over the next couple of weeks!
Insecure is back on Sunday, April 12! We are celebrating the premiere with our first-ever Twitter Chat. 😆 After being deprived for a year, get your Twitter thumbs ready as we prepare to find out what's going on with our gal pals: Issa, Molly, Kelli and Molly. We'll provide more details on the Twitter Chat next week. We really hope you can join us!
Have you heard of #The100DayProject? This project has been tremendous especially last year when we first joined to get our writing groove back. We are excited to take part in the challenge again this year with something new to learn: Calligraphy. If your time allows, #The100DayProject is simple and fun. All you have to do is choose a project, do it every day for 100 days (you pick how long you want to do. Ours was about 5-10 minutes), and share your process on Instagram with the hashtag #The100DayProject. Interested? If so, drop us a note on what you are planning to do so we can be accountability partners!
We are thrilled to announce Alvin Ailey's "Ailey for All," a new series of weekly online performances that will start this evening at 7 pm to stream during COVID-19. This online portal was also created for fans to search through archival performances, dance classes, and original short films produced by the dancers. We've always had a conflict when the Alvin Ailey performances hit the town. This will be an awesome opportunity to experience its greatness during this time!
