After referring to herself as "ugly" in a recorded video while her hairstylist, Shabria, twisted her locks, four-year-old Ariyonna has received an outpour of love from celebrities - showing the need for us to speak better about ourselves, but also ensure we tell our black and brown girls how beautiful they are.
After being sick and tired of seeing the "good ole boys club," Stephanie Lampkin created Visible Figures to create a network for Black women in tech to build and leverage relationships within a small community who are beating the odds with the limitation of a welcoming space for them.

Black Lives Matters founders Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza and Opel Tometi are featured on the cover of the Time 100 Women of Year issue, representing the year 2013 when George Zimmerman was acquitted for killing unarmed Trayvon Martin.
Black women are continuing to fill the void like self-taught director Malaki who created Made in Her Image which is a nonprofit, incubator-based workshop that teaches short filmmaking to girls of color ages 8 to 18; actress Tika Sumpter and media executive Thai Randolph created Sugaberry which is a media brand that will close the gap on content for mothers of color; and Keisha Manning who created NursesAirbnb to help travel nurses find temporary housing while working odd shifts.
Femicides Have to End: The day after the celebratory International Women's Day, women across Mexico participated in a strike by staying home on what is now called, " a day without women" or "a day without us," to protest the killing of women in Mexico. Roughly 10 women in Mexico are killed everyday, and femicides have increased by 137% over the last five years. However, women make up 40% of the workforce, and therefore their absence would be incredibly significant and would cost the country billions. Despite the Mexican government and large companies including Walmart and Sears paying those who protested, it is still not making the impact needed to stop this outrageous behavior.
Her Legacy Stays Alive: One of the most influential advocates and leaders in the fight for gender and racial equality is receiving a statue in her honor at Capitol Hill. The statue of Mary Mcleod Bethune will become the first of a Black woman in the US Capitol, which is all credited to Representative Val Demings. In addition, Mary Mcleod Bethune's statue will replace a statue of former confederate general Edmund Kirby Smith 🙃
Tell Your Reps Today: Did you know that 80% of Black women are the main breadwinners in their families, but 70% of black mothers do not have access to any type of paid family leave. As we have noted in previous issues, these disparities place black mothers at higher risks for health complications and impact to the needed bonding with their children. You can help by completing this form and writing to your local representative to help change these outcomes for our black mothers.
Paving the Way for Equality in the Military: Former U.S. Marine Capt. Anuradha Bhagwati fought for servicewomen to serve in direct combat ground and access to the frontlines of the battlefield, which has only been recently granted within the last decade. The Yale University and Columbia University grad joined the Marines where she despicable behavior because she is a woman such as enduring rape jokes and harassment because of her gender. When she left the Marines, she left with the scars of PTSD and depression, which led her to start the Service Women's Action Network to help other women who are facing the same challenges. Her bravery and leadership is helping women locally and women who are fighting for their rights within the military system.
