Continuing the legacy: Following in the trailblazing footsteps of Cathy Hughes, Boston radio personality Danielle Johnson created Spark FM - the first digital radio station owned by a black woman. Danielle is creating this platform to help pave the way for media professionals like herself who are facing barriers to enter the larger media businesses. She hopes to launch Spark FM this Spring and recently started a kickstarter to help raise funds for her launch. Let's show her some love!
Black Hair Defined: In honor of Black History Month, the Huffington Post launched a series called the Black Hair Defined to help "untangle conversations about our crowning glory." The introduction to the series notes the positive initiatives toward ending hair discrimination by highlighting the Crown Act which officially bans hair discrimination in New York, New Jersey and California (You may recognize this story again). The writers also spotlighted the absolutely adorable short movie called Hair Love created by filmmaker Matthew Cherry on a father's journey styling his daughter's hair. Hair is a form of self-expression, and HuffPost's first series - Digital Hair Museum - is the visual depiction of just that. The museum is a culmination of black women and men highlighting their hair journeys and celebrating those who influenced their styles.
State of Union for Black Women: The State of the Union address was delivered this week to showcase the accomplishments made by black women for various issues like employment and health, and also gives a sense of how things are shaping up for black women for 2020 when it comes to wealth and education which was written by BlackHer. (Yeah we don't acknowledge that other address that was made this week.) Check out the #SOTU written for us, by us. Drop us a note and tell us what you think!
Kicking Off Black History Month Right: Brands like Walmart, Target and Google recently launched campaigns that spotlights the dynamic, multi-talented community of black leaders, artists, entrepreneurs activists and more, like Walmart honoring Lisa Williams who turned her side hustle into her main hustle supporting young black girls with dolls that look just like them. Like Google's already favorited ad featuring the "most searched" winners, artists, celebrities and more. To kickoff Black History Month, Google featured a doodle of the 60th anniversary of the Greensboro sit-in which was created by Karen Collins, an artist from Compton and founder of the African American Miniature Museum. Lastly, Target released a black history inspired apparel line and created the Beyond Measure campaign which features the journeys of various Black entrepreneurs and founders who have joined the Target family along with highlighting the Target staff who are making a difference internally.
She Has Done It Again: Costume Designer Ruth Carter teamed up with H&M to create a curated collection of clothing that pays homage to the 80s and 90s. Ruth's work spans the end of time from designing and styling for Spike Lee films to her most recent notable, award winning work for Black Panther. The collection is fun and nostalgic, but also inspiring as Ruth decided to collaborate with a brand that has received backlash for their wrong "fashion" choices. But like Ruth shares, she "thought she could get the most out of H&M by being a collaborator and showing the world that they too want to Do The Right Thing."
